The degree in business management: mandatory to start?
Do you dream of becoming your own boss and building a thriving self-employment business? Then you may be wondering: do I need a business management degree to get started? Although the rules have relaxed somewhat in Belgium, a strong basic business management knowledge is still the key to success!
In this article, we unravel everything you need to know about the certificate in basic business management, regulated professions, and how to get off to a flying start-no matter which region you want to operate in. Happy reading!
Starting up as self-employed: what diplomas do you need?
Since 1 September 2018, in the Flemish Region, the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital Region, it is no longer compulsory to obtain an attestation of business management or a certificate of basic knowledge of business management. This applies both to those who want to start a sole proprietorship and to those who want to start working as an independent business head.
However, for certain regulated professions, such as general contractor or liberal professions, an attestation of professional competence or proof of relevant practical experience may remain necessary. The enterprise office will then assess whether you meet the requirements.
So it is possible to start self-employment without any qualifications, but is this wise? More on this later.
Can you become self-employed without a degree?
Yes, in most cases (sectors) nowadays you can start a self-employed activity without a degree in business management. Nevertheless, a recognised business management course is highly recommended as it will provide you with the necessary knowledge on financial management, customer administration, taxation and other aspects of the day-to-day management of a business.
This knowledge can be useful to understand the ins and outs related to the financial aspect of the business. You can of course seek advice from your accountant but it is always advisable to have the necessary basic knowledge yourself. Consequently, this will ensure that you are well prepared when dealing with an accountant.
Are foreign diplomas valid?
Do you have a diploma from abroad? An equivalent diploma, such as a university degree or a higher education diploma, can often be recognised, but sometimes has to be officially approved first. In Belgium, you can get your degree recognised through NARIC- vlaanderen. This is especially important in Brussels and Wallonia, where additional procedures may apply.
Basic business management and professional knowledge, what is it?
It is essential that you have sufficient basic business management skills. This then means understanding accounting, VAT returns, social contributions and preparing a financial plan. Although a degree or certificate in business management is no longer compulsory, you can still prove your knowledge by:
Attend an accredited business management course.
A certificate in basic business management or attestation of business management to be obtained through the central examination board.
A higher education or university degree, with finance subjects.
Evidence of relevant practical experience
Do you need another degree in business management?
For most professions, a degree in business management or a certificate in basic business management is no longer required. Nevertheless, it is useful to take a business management course and obtain a certificate in business management so that you can tackle and understand the challenges of entrepreneurship in a good direction.
Difference between Flemish Region, Walloon Region and Brussels Capital Region
Although the three regions largely follow the same rules, there may be minor differences:
In the Flemish Region, there has been no requirement for a diploma or attestation of business management since 2018.
In the Walloon Region and the Brussels Capital Region, the rules for regulated professions are stricter. Some professions may still require an attestation of basic business management knowledge or proof of professional competence.
Attestation of professional competence
For regulated professions, such as a general contractor or specific liberal professions, an attestation of professional competence may be required. This attestation is issued based on a combination of training, practical experience and possibly a central examination board.
Attestation of basic knowledge of business management
Although the degree in business management is no longer compulsory, do not underestimate the certificate in business management. This document shows that you have the essential skills needed to run a business. It includes knowledge of accounting, social contributions, VAT rules and financial management, among other things. This attestation is especially useful for those who want to make a strong start without extensive practical experience or a degree.
How long does the business management course take?
A business management course can last from a few weeks to months, depending on the path chosen. These courses are flexible and accessible, preparing you to obtain a certificate in business management or a certificate in basic knowledge.
How can you prove your knowledge of business management?
There are several ways to demonstrate that you have basic business management skills:
Obtain a certificate in basic business management through a recognised course or the central exam board.
A degree such as a university degree, higher education diploma or equivalent that includes business management.
Demonstrate relevant practical experience, for example as an independent helper or through positions in the day-to-day management of a company.
The regulated professions
As already mentioned, some professions, such as starting your own beauty salon, require an attestation of competence. Again, the enterprise office will assess which documents you need to submit.
Foreign diploma: get your diploma recognised
Have you obtained a degree outside Belgium? Get it recognised through the relevant authorities, such as NARIC, so you can prove that you meet the requirements.
This is important for starting a business in Brussels and Wallonia.
